I Whitesnake tornano sulla scena con una mossa inaspettata: un album tributo ai Deep Purple, che ripropone brani degli album “Burn”, “Stormbringer” e “Come Taste The Band”. Ai più intransigenti “puristi” del porpora una scelta del genere può apparire azzardata, addirittura oltraggiosa, ma noi pensiamo sia necessario svincolarsi dal confronto con le versioni originali di questi pezzi storici, per poter veramente apprezzare il lavoro svolto da Mr. Coverdale e soci.
La selezione dei brani presenti in questo "The Purple Album", ripercorre in maniera equilibrata la stagione che tutti definiscono delle Mark III e IV, quella che segnò l’ascesa e l’affermazione di David Coverdale sulla scena rock mondiale.
L’alfa e l’omega sono affidate a due veri e propri “inni”, che i Whitesnake hanno riproposto spesso in sede live sotto forma di medley. L’incendiaria “Burn” è la opener del disco, e non riserva grandi sorprese, poiché non si discosta molto dalla già nota versione live, se non per una diversa interpretazione degli assolo di chitarra e tastiera. Lo stesso può dirsi della conclusiva “Stormbringer”, che resta tuttavia un brano dal notevole impatto. Curiosamente sono i brani meno emblematici ad essere rivisitati in maniera più azzeccata, su tutti le versioni acustiche di “Sail Away” e “Holy Man”, che ci permettono di apprezzare la maestria di Joel Hoekstra, nuovo elemento della band, al quale sono state affidate le parti di chitarra acustica dell’album. Un intro d’armonica introduce invece “You Fool No One”, pezzo dall’incedere incalzante, la cui struttura originale ben si presta a questa rivisitazione in chiave decisamente Whitesnake, mentre la leggendaria “Might Just Take Your Life” -originariamente caratterizzata da un prepotente organo Hammond- è introdotta da un’accattivante slide guitar, soluzione audace ma assolutamente convincente. “Love Child” mantiene inalterata la sua originale e magnetica sensualità, pur presentando un arrangiamento più moderno ed aggressivo, lo stesso vale per la nuova versione di “The Gypsy”, dall’atmosfera mistica e intrigante.
“Lady Double Dealer” è forse per sua stessa natura la canzone che meglio si integra con il repertorio dei Whitesnake e che mette in risalto il graffiante screaming di David, così come la successiva “Mistreated”, che oltre ad evidenziare una grande prova di voce e di cuore, è impreziosita da uno degli assolo più intensi dell’album, firmato da Reb Beach.
La prestazione di Beach è di grande rilievo sull’intero lavoro, che più di ogni altro porta la sua impronta nel repertorio del Serpente Bianco. E’ assolutamente degna di menzione anche la performance vocale dello stesso Beach, in particolare sulla splendida “You Keep On Moving”, dove Reb ed il Maestro duettano superbamente in un autentico crescendo emotivo.
La tracklist comprende inoltre “Lay Down Stay Down”, anch’essa ben contestualizzata grazie ad un’interpretazione fresca ed attuale, ma ancora in possesso del suo antico groove e l’immancabile “Soldier Of Fortune”, un capolavoro al quale difficilmente si potrebbe aggiungere qualcosa e che viene qui riproposto in tutta la sua struggente semplicità.
In conclusione si tratta di un ottimo disco, che rende omaggio ad un glorioso passato, ma che si colloca più che dignitosamente anche nel nostro presente, se saremo capaci di non cedere ai pregiudizi.

Whitesnake return on the scene with an unexpected move: a Deep Purple tribute featuring songs from “Burn”, “Stormbringer” and “Come Taste the Band”. The most intransigent “purple-purists" may find this choice hazardous, even outrageous, but in our opinion it is necessary to break free from comparisons with the original versions of those memorable songs in order to appreciate the work carried out by Mr. Coverdale & Co.
The tracks selection evenly revisits the seasons called Mark III and IV, which determined the rise and success of David Coverdale on the world rock scene. The album starts and ends with two authentic anthems, often performed live by Whitesnake as a medley. The incendiary “Burn” is the album’s opener and does not differ much from the above-mentioned live version. The same applies to the conclusive “Stormbringer”, which remains a remarkably impressive song. Curiously, the less emblematic songs underwent the most inspired and brilliant reinterpretations, such as the acoustic versions of “Sail Away” and “Holy Man”, which highlight the skills of Mr. Joel Hoekstra, the new guitarist of the band, who took on the task to realize and perform the acoustic parts of the album. A harp intro introduces “You Fool No One”, a song with a relentless rhythm and an original structure particularly suitable to this Whitesnake-style rearrangement, whereas the legendary “Might Just Take Your Life” -originally dominated by the Hammond organ- is introduced by the charming sound of a slide guitar, a daring but ingenious solution.“Love Child” maintains unaltered its original and magnetic sensuality, although it features a more modern and aggressive arrangement. The same goes for “The Gypsy”, a song with a mystic and intriguing atmosphere.
“Lady Double Dealer” is perhaps by its very nature the song that best complements the Whitesnake repertoire and brings out David Coverdale’s fierce and powerful vocals, as well as the following track, “Mistreated”, that besides featuring a great voice & soul performance, is embellished by one of the most intense guitar solos of the album, performed by Reb Beach. Reb Beach’s performance is absolutely noteworthy on the entire work, which bears his imprint more than any previous record of the band. Reb also delivered great vocals on all songs, especially on the wonderful “You Keep On Moving”, where he magnificently duets with the Maestro in a truly emotional crescendo.
The track list also includes “Lay Down Stay Down”, a song that duly fits in the album’s context thanks to a fresh and modern interpretation, but still shows its ancient groove, and the indispensable “Soldier of Fortune”, a masterpiece which could hardly be improved and that is now reproduced in all its touching simplicity.
In conclusion, this is an excellent album, which pays tribute to a glorious past but also finds a more than creditable collocation into our present, as long as we get rid of preconceptions.
